The Ultimate City Year Dynamic Duo: An AmeriCorps Member & His City Year Alumni Partner Teacher

When you enter Room 110 of our school’s freshman academy, be prepared for the dynamic duo, AmeriCorps member Mr. Andrew and his partner teacher Ms. Reid, to bring the “j-factor” (Noun: an injection of joy) to English class. What makes this partnership unique? True, Mr. Andrew and Ms. Reid are both Tulsa transplants, choosing to relocate from Utah and Ohio to share their passion learning and serving Tulsa’s students. But, it’s the fact that Ms. Reid served in Room 110 just one year prior as a City Year AmeriCorps member that gives her the intimate understanding of the benefits in having a City Year in the classroom.

Ripples of Hope

On Tuesday, December 12, QuickTrip CEO Chet Cadieux and City Year Tulsa held our inaugural Executives for Education breakfast at the Summit Club. The goal was to unite executives across Tulsa in the call to support our education system. AmeriCorps member Dierdra Kelly addressed executives and fellow Corps members, offering remarks of hope and a bright future for education in Oklahoma.

National Donation from Staples

Upon opening her box, one principal screamed with delight and said “All of this, for our school? This is so exciting! Thank you City Year and thank you Staples!” One principal laughingly said “This ream of paper is for the office and the other items are going to my teachers. They work so hard, they deserve these gifts.”

New Beginnings

Nathan Hale High School became the ninth school of Tulsa Public Schools to gain a City Year team to help develop students and increase an appreciation for education within the student body. When we begin partnerships, we are able to set the tone of what City Year is and begin building the beloved community with our administration, teachers, and students.
