City Year Tulsa
Together we can make a difference for Tulsa’s students across our growing city, where a commitment to community, philanthropy, innovation and creativity fuels a modern pioneering spirit and inspires us to help students and young people thrive.
Serving in Tulsa
While Tulsa is widely known for being a vibrant center for academia, business, tech and medicine, some students in Tulsa face significant challenges every day. The Tulsa School District serves more than 32,000 students across 69 schools.
It has been a true honor to be able to serve in Tulsa. Being able to serve in communities like the ones in which I grew up has been eye opening, and knowing I am making an impact has been encouraging. Serving with City Year in Tulsa feels like home.
National leader in elementary education
Tulsa has built a reputation as a hot spot for early childhood education policy and program research and innovation. Oklahoma is a leader in providing universal access to pre-kindergarten, ranking 4th nationally. Tulsa benefits from a robust public-private partnership that looks to create long term success from early childhood to elementary school with university research, education nonprofit partnerships, and philanthropic energy.
Your corps experience
City Year is a key partner with the Tulsa School District in creating equitable learning opportunities for all students and develop the city’s future leaders. City Year AmeriCorps members serving in our elementary schools have the opportunity to be a part of innovative shifts in the elementary school space, witnessing the impact that generous philanthropic investment, research and service can make in the lives of young children, their families and community.
With more than 76% of students tutored by AmeriCorps members last year improving their test scores, AmeriCorps members are truly making an impact. A close-knit community with ample opportunities to develop meaningful personal and professional relationships, Tulsa is an ideal place to serve. By engaging students, families and community organizations, City Year helps TPS students achieve excellence.
Serving in Tulsa schools
Wherever AmeriCorps members serve in Tulsa, they not only contribute to the exciting innovations in urban education but are part of a larger movement expanding equitable outcomes to our highest need students.
Our City Year AmeriCorps members are empowered to learn from each other as much as they are learning from education experts and facilitators. While our corps has a broad range of educational and career interests, from education to psychology, math, medicine, and business, and 73% of them come to Tulsa from all over the country, they all are passionate about social justice and service to a cause greater than themselves. In fact, 41% of all out of state Corps members choose to continue working in Tulsa after their year of service.
Working on a team
Work with a committed and diverse group of 73 City Year AmeriCorps members who share your passion for service and personal growth.
When you serve with City Year Tulsa, you will also form strong relationships with your team of 5 to 10 fellow corps members serving at your specific school – these are the teammates you will serve, collaborate, brainstorm, and reflect with each day during your year of service. You and your teammates will work together every day to serve the students in your classrooms, as well as plan exciting events and initiatives to impact a positive whole school climate.
In Tulsa, we utilize a 1:1 model, meaning that we place one Impact Manager to one school-based team, empowering our teams to develop trust, confidence, and consistency. Having one Impact Manager per school allows the manager to maximize relationships with school administrators, advocate for AmeriCorps members in the schools and ensure growth goals are met in our students.
City Year Tulsa staff also support AmeriCorps members by connecting corps members to resources in Tulsa, opportunities to connect professionally and recreationally with community partners and helping corps members get the most out of their year with City Year Tulsa.
Our learning and development strategy utilizes a robust City Year-developed curriculum, evidence-based learning strategies, and community and subject matter experts who are doing exciting things in Tulsa, all to make sure you feel confident as you make a big impact in your students’ lives.
Upon arriving at City Year Tulsa, you will jump right into Onboarding Training, designed to give you the fundamentals necessary to start the school year strong. During the school year, you will continue to learn and develop in your school teams and alongside your fellow AmeriCorps members at monthly Learning and Development days, where you will get support in applying your training in your classrooms, brainstorming innovative strategies to use with your students, and how to take care of yourself personally throughout your year of service.
Our learning and development strategy also challenges you to reflect on how you want to grow during your year of service. Based on your own professional or educational interests, we will match you with a community mentor who can help you set goals and make connections; together, we will make sure your year of service sets you up for excellence well after your time with City Year.
