City Year San José/Silicon Valley COVID-19 updates

During this unprecedented time, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our AmeriCorps members, staff members, students, partners, and the broader communities we serve.

Our Community

The safety and well-being of the City Year community – AmeriCorps members, students, staff members, partners, and the broader communities we serve – is always our top priority. Both locally and nationally, City Year continues to review guidance from health officials, proactively preparing, and responding in real-time to the rapidly evolving situation related to COVID-19.

Additionally, we remain in constant communication with our school district partners, Alum Rock Union School District (ARUSD) and East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD), as well as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to align with their safety guidelines. As an organization, we will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of our programming and most importantly, our shared community. As we do our best to continue our work of supporting students and families in Santa Clara County.

How City Year is Supporting Teachers and Students Remotely

In partnership with ARUSD and ESUHSD, City Year is creating and supporting distance learning opportunities for students across its 14 partner schools. To meet the unique needs of each school community, City Year program staff continue to work closely with our school-partner principals to develop customized strategies for AmeriCorps member supports such as:

  • Whole Class Assistance: At several elementary and middle school, AmeriCorps members are assisting teachers on Google Classroom or other virtual office-hour spaces
  • Small Group Tutoring: At the high school level, AmeriCorps members are piloting virtual tutoring through Zoom breakout sessions
  • Community-Building Lessons: At a few elementary schools, AmeriCorps members are leading engaging lessons to help students continue building academic and socio-emotional skills

Your Support is Needed

Amidst the ever-evolving changes in the world around us, City Year’s mission to be of service to others remains constant. Now more than ever, we need your support so that we can continue meeting the needs of students and AmeriCorps members. For both our students and AmeriCorps members, please consider supporting our work in one of the following ways.

Host learning workshops & webinars for AmeriCorps members

Whether you have an expertise in career-readiness skills or have a passion for your career, we are looking for volunteer facilitators that can help us provide professional development experiences to our young adult AmeriCorps members.

Share job opportunities with our AmeriCorps members

Do you know of hiring opportunities at a company or organization that would be a great fit for an AmeriCorps member? Our AmeriCorps members are looking to make a difference in a variety of fields after their June graduation.

Tell a young person you know to apply for City Year

Do you know of a young person who is passionate about serving others and looking to develop as leader? City Year is actively recruiting for the 2020-2021 class of AmeriCorps members who are ready to create change in their community.

Help us support their journey

Our AmeriCorps members continue their pledge to serve students and schools, even remotely. Your pledge of support ensures that they can continue to be that trusting adult and mentor within school communities that need us right now.

Stories from the Corps

AmeriCorps members and students form powerful mentorships over the course of the school year. Through joyous and challenging moments, our AmeriCorps members remain that constant, caring adult – and that commitment stays true in this new reality. Read a reflection from Maraina Weyl that highlights many missed memories between her and her students.
