San José is home to an ethnically diverse community, booming technology companies and aspiring entrepreneurs. City Year San José/Silicon Valley works alongside teachers and community partners to support students across our city.
We are working to address the lack of equitable access to educational opportunities. Our City Year San José/Silicon Valley AmeriCorps members partner with teachers and schools to add more support and to help create learning environments where all students can build on their strengths and fully engage in their learning.
In partnership with Alum Rock Union school district and East Side Union High school district, our team uses both qualitative and quantitative data to ensure that our AmeriCorps members are effectively supporting students.
In the 2018-2019 school year working in 14 San José schools, we were able to achieve powerful results:
Accelerating academic progress in San José
- 57% of students who started the year with a D or F in English Language Arts courses who were tutored by City Year AmeriCorps members ended the year with an A, B or C.
- 51% of students tutored by City Year met or exceeded one year of growth in mathematics.
Advancing interpersonal and workforce readiness skills
- 47% of students who were identified as needing support made significant progress on key social-emotional skills related to college and career readiness.
Partnering with teachers
- 88% of partner teachers agree that AmeriCorps members fostered a positive environment for learning.
City Year has been one of our strongest improvement partners. The positive energy, the care and the commitment that City Year AmeriCorps members bring to our schools are invaluable.
