About City Year

City Year, an AmeriCorps program, helps students across schools succeed. Diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members provide support, helping to ensure that students in systematically under-resourced schools receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their community.

What will year one be like?

Your first City Year begins mid-July with an intensive two-week summer training – City Year Service Learning Academy – in preparation for the role of a school day learning coach. Your start of service begins the first week in August. As you take classes at the University of Central Florida (UCF) toward your degree, you’ll spend 35-40 hours a week serving in an OCPS Title I partner school.

As a City Year AmeriCorps member serving as a school day learning coach, your service will focus on coaching and mentoring students. If you are enrolled in UCF’s Elementary Education program, you will be placed in an elementary school for this service. If you are enrolled in UCF’s Exceptional Education program, you will likely be placed in a middle or high school with placement in an elementary school subject to availability.

As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you will help students earn academic success, improve their attendance, learn social-emotional skills and develop positive behaviors at school. You will also plan and monitor individual student progress, while working with teachers on whole class instruction, breakout spaces and other in-class student assistance.

Am I qualified?

City Year AmeriCorps members participating in this program must be enrolled as juniors in UCF’s Elementary or Exceptional Education programs.

Applicants must:

  • Complete the University General Education requirements or their equivalent (i.e., an AA degree from an approved Florida College System or State University System institution)
  • Achieve a minimum overall GPA of 2.5
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Authorization to work in the U.S. is not sufficient. Those with DACA status unfortunately are not eligible at this time.)

Significant consideration will be given to applicants who have completed or who are currently enrolled in EDF 2005/1005 Introduction to Teaching and other program prerequisites: EDF 2940, EDG 2000, EDF 2130, EDE 2280, and/or EDF 2720.
