Celebrating a new team sponsor at City Year Miami

City Year’s work has always been grounded in collaboration.

Our service in schools is made possible through the support of local school districts and communities, the national AmeriCorps program, corporate sponsors, individual donors, and philanthropic investors—all of whom help to advance our mission to support the learning, development, and success of young people.

Without this multi-sector support, nearly 1,500 City Year AmeriCorps members would not be able to serve tens of thousands of students across 29 U.S. cities every day as student success coaches (SSCs).

City Year Miami gains a new team sponsor

Last week, City Year Miami celebrated the Bronfman Hauptman Foundation’s new role as a City Year Miami Team Sponsor with a visit to a local K-8 school. City Year Miami has more than 170 AmeriCorps members who serve more than 7,000 students in Miami-Dade County.

“City Year’s belief that every young person should have the opportunity to serve their community and that every child deserves access to a quality education has inspired our family’s engagement with the organization for nearly two decades,” Andrew Hauptman said.

“As new Miami residents, we are excited to deepen our relationship with City Year and support the outstanding work City Year Miami is doing to help students reach their full potential.”

On Monday, Ellen and Andrew visited Citrus Grove K-8 Center, part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools District. Citrus Grove serves more than 1,600 students, from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

The visit highlighted Ellen Bronfman Hauptman and Andrew Hauptman’s commitment to expanding educational opportunity and ensuring that every student has the relationships, encouragement, and resources needed to reach their full potential.

A closer look at what student success coaches do

This is the second year that City Year Miami AmeriCorps members are partnering with Citrus Grove classroom teachers, providing additional capacity to help meet students’ academic and interpersonal needs.

As student success coaches, corps members provide academic tutoring and mentoring to help students stay on track to graduation, prepared for postsecondary and career success.

City Year Miami corps members build positive relationships with students, strengthening their sense of belonging in school and engagement in learning. SSCs support students to master key skills, whether that’s figuring out fractions or learning how to work in teams.

Last year, City Year Miami SSCs delivered nearly 23,000 minutes of math coaching across more than 700 sessions to students who benefited from the extra support, along with 48,000 minutes of English Language Arts support across nearly 2,500 sessions.

Seeing City Year’s impact in schools

During the visit, Ellen and Andrew joined City Year Miami’s leadership, corps members, school administrators, and students to learn more about the program’s impact and opportunities to expand support for young people who want to serve their community.

Citrus Grove is known for its innovative curriculum that fosters 21st-century skills, including a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) classes; a “magnet academy” that integrates music technology, space science and marine biology; bilingual pathways in multiple languages; and strong school spirit.

Ellen and Andrew have a long history with City Year. In 2007, they helped launch City Year Los Angeles, where Andrew served as founding board chair for nine years. He now serves as a Charter Trustee of City Year, Inc., supporting the organization’s national mission and growth.
