While Detroit is widely known for being a vibrant center for academia, business, tech and medicine, some students in Detroit face significant challenges every day. As the largest school district in Michigan, the Detroit School District serves more than 15,000 students across 125 schools.
Your corps experience
City Year is a key partner to the Detroit Public Schools Community District in creating equitable learning opportunities for all students and develop the city’s future leaders. AmeriCorps members support teachers and staff in delivering instruction that serves the development of the whole child and is responsive to the diverse racial, cultural and linguistic needs of Detroit youth.
With more than 76% of students tutored by AmeriCorps members last year improving their test scores, AmeriCorps members are truly making an impact. A close-knit community with ample opportunities to develop meaningful personal and professional relationships, Detroit is an ideal place to serve.

It’s Red Jacket Day at the Capitol!
Over the weekend, our staff and AmeriCorps members joined other Southeast Michigan AmeriCorps programs in Michigan’s AmeriCorps Russ Mawby Signature Service Project! This project took place in partnership with Friends of the Rouge for Rouge Park Appreciation Day. AmeriCorps members and volunteers worked together to help clean up the Rouge Park. Service activities included trail work, trash cleanup, planting/weeding, and invasive species removal. #CityYear #AmeriCorps
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! The effort to officially recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander contributions to the US began in the late 1970s, and took over 10 years to make it a permanent month-long celebration. This month, we celebrate the histories of Americans hailing from the Asian continent - including East, Southeast, and South Asia - and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia! #aapiheritagemonth
