Strong Partnerships for a Better Future

Our partnerships are successful because we share common goals: to make a real impact in the individual lives of students, to better our communities and to build our nation as a whole. Our partners know that with our work, we are also addressing a long-term economic problem. Research shows that if current trends carry on, and students continue to drop out of school at the rate they are now, our nation will be facing a significant shortage of qualified workers to fill available jobs in the future.

By 2020, it’s predicted that there will be 123 million skilled, high-wage jobs available, but only 50 million individuals qualified to fill them.

City Year is working to combat this problem and fill the shortage by better preparing tomorrow’s workforce. We’re doing this in two ways. First, our corps members—many of whom are young adults right out of college—gain vital leadership and career skills every day by working with their students and going through extensive training that prepares them to be leaders in business and their communities. Secondly, the students we’re focused on serving are more likely to graduate high school and become more qualified employees in the future, largely due to our efforts and the dedication of our AmeriCorps members.

“By contributing our best thinking along with our financial resources, Deloitte is committed to helping City Year address the alarming dropout rate. We share the belief that keeping students on track, in the graduation pipeline today, will help create the business and civic leaders of tomorrow.” - Barry Salzberg, CEO, Deloitte LLP
