City Year San Antonio 2022 Opening Day!

City Year San Antonio hosted its annual Opening Day, Friday, September 9th at the beautiful Magnolia Halle. The more than 120 guests created an evening filled with joyful energy and inspiration for the future! Our new 49 AmeriCorps members have dedicated so much of themselves to the growth and success of their students. We were excited to support and rally our new team of dedicated young people for their upcoming year of service in our eight San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) partner schools.

The highlight of the evening was eight powerful testimonies from eight of our amazing Corps members on “Why They Serve”. Joseph Nunez shared a personal story of serving because he was inspired by his brother. Kay McCall and Lesly Morales spoke about wanting to serve because they identified completely with the students they serve, and Nick Stoiana shared how much it meant to him when someone finally showed up in a positive way and how he wants to be that someone for his students.

Our special keynote speaker, Patti Salzmann, SAISD Deputy Superintendent taught us the true meaning of the word ‘familia’ and challenged all of us that we don’t just serve our students, but we are here to make the impossible a reality!

The desire to serve has brought together young adults from around the world! Over 50% of this AmeriCorps class is from outside San Antonio! These young adults moved here from California, Colorado, Connecticut, and Kaiserslautern, Germany! Collectively, this AmeriCorps class will serve 5,000 students in SAISD!
