Community Giving with Five Star Bank

Five Star Bank has been a long-time supporter of City Year Sacramento and this year chose to make a deeper investment by “filling a yellow jacket”. Essentially every AmeriCorps student success coach working in one of our partner schools requires $15,000 in private donations to support their work. We sat down with SVP/Chief Marketing Officer Shelley Wetton from Five Star Bank to learn more about their clear commitment to education equity in our region.

Can you share why Five Star Bank was excited to support the work of City Year?

Five Star Bank is dedicated to serving our entire community and has designated 2021 as our Year of Impact. As a community business bank, we have always made it a priority to work with nonprofits, like City Year, to provide needed resources to the vulnerable and underserved. We also believe in action over words. Our commitment extends beyond monetary donations to volunteerism and extensive board participation. Supporting City Year’s mission to create equity in education aligns with our commitment to making our communities a better place to learn, live and work.

Five Star chose to focus their support on “filling a yellow jacket” which directly supports the work of City Year student success coaches providing attendance, academic, and social-emotional support to an entire classroom of students over the entire school year. Can you tell me about the decision to support in that way?

City Year is a highly respected organization with a mission that aligns with Five Star Bank’s impact initiatives. We knew filling a Yellow Jacket would make an impact by ensuring every child in every neighborhood has access to an equitable education. We are humbled to be part of the City Year program.

What is the responsibility of large Corporations to support the work of local nonprofits?

It is incumbent upon companies to support the communities they serve. Nonprofits are often dependent on the charitable giving and guidance provided by community partners and businesses like Five Star Bank. We happily come alongside nonprofits to help them overcome challenges, to sustain and to endure so they can help those they serve.

Earlier in the year, the team at Leataata Floyd Elementary made a virtual version of power greeting for Five Star bank, we had a lot of fun doing it, can you tell us how you have used it?

Five Star Bank’s power greeting has been a great way to get our employees engaged and help them more fully understand and appreciate City Year’s purpose and work.
