Your stipend and local benefits

Learn more about your bi-weekly stipend and the various benefits awarded to City Year Providence AmeriCorps members – both during and after service.

Plan & prepare

By prioritizing and planning, you can live in Providence on your City Year stipend. The information and resources below will help you prepare for your year (or two) of service. You will receive a full up-to-date review of our benefits when you join us in August.

Your stipend

  • As a City Year Providence AmeriCorps Member, you will receive a taxed bi-weekly stipend of $890 before taxes.
  • You will receive your stipend through direct deposit every other Friday. This is contingent upon completion of your timesheet each week. Your manager will guide you through this process.
  • We host sessions with partners like Santander to give you budgeting tools and resources. In your first month of training, we will also provide a session on how to best stretch your stipend in Providence!

National benefits

In addition to your stipend, you’ll also receive health insurance, access to Employee Assistance and Talkspace Therapy programs, as well as relocation support.

Local benefits

City Year Providence offers additional benefits at the local level:

  • Access to mental health support: We have a local psychologist who is available to talk with you and help support with self-care strategies.
  • Bus passes: We offer free Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus passes with unlimited rides to help you travel to and from school and around the city. You’ll receive your bus pass during registration.
  • SNAP benefits: Most of our AmeriCorps members choose to apply for food assistance during their year of service. We will support and guide you through this process of applying and maintaining this benefit throughout your service year.
  • Absence days and appointment times – You will be able to schedule 12 days off during your service year, in addition to holiday breaks and other site scheduled days off. You will also have access to three separate three appointment times, which you can use throughout the year for whatever personal appointments you may have.
  • Emergency fund: Given the financial challenges AmeriCorps members might face throughout the year, City Year Providence in collaboration with the site’s board has created an AmeriCorps Member Support Fund/Services. Members can apply for funds if they are faced with an unexpected financial burden throughout their year of service.
  • And more! We are constantly seeking new ways to support our members and appreciate you for your service in Providence. We’re excited to share the most recent innovations with you when we meet you.

Your student loans may be eligible for forbearance

You may be eligible to have the repayment of a qualified student loan temporarily postponed while you are serving. While a loan is in forbearance, the individual is not required to make payments. You may also request an interest accrual payment on your loans that are in forbearance during your City Year. Learn more on AmeriCorps’ website to see if you’re eligible and how to apply.

You will also receive a Segal Education Award upon completion of the program. This taxable award, currently valued at $6,195 for full time members, can be used for loans or future educational expenses. As your service year closes out, we will provide guidance on how to get the most out of your education award. For example, City Year partners with many universities to match your award!
