Your stipend and local benefits

Learn more about your biweekly stipend and the various benefits awarded to City Year Buffalo AmeriCorps members – both during and after service.

Plan & prepare

By prioritizing and planning, you can live in Buffalo on your City Year stipend. The information and resources below will help you prepare for your year (or two) of service.

Your stipend

As a City Year Buffalo AmeriCorps member serving 1,700 hours over the course of the year as a student success coach, you will receive a biweekly stipend of $890 (pre-tax). AmeriCorps members serving in the 900-hour school day learning coach role will receive a biweekly stipend of $472 (pre-tax).

You will receive your stipend via direct deposit every other Friday. This is contingent upon your timesheets being submitted and approved on time. Your manager will guide you through this process.

Throughout the service year, AmeriCorps members will have the opportunity to have learning and development sessions on budgeting. We work with our community partner Bank of America for a budget and finance workshop catered to service at City Year titled “Better Money Habits.” We have also included a few popular budgeting resources among our Buffalo staff and AmeriCorps member:

National benefits

In addition to your stipend, you’ll also receive health insurance, access to Employee Assistance and Talkspace Therapy programs, as well as relocation support.

Local benefits

Metal health and well-being

We work with local community organizations that focus on mental health and wellbeing. AmeriCorps members will get certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through Compeer, receive training in Restorative Justice through Erie County Restorative Justice Coalition and have wellness sessions like yoga and meditation.

Food assistance

We will provide a letter of employment for your SNAP benefits application. We’ll also allow for any time off needed to apply. We also have an AmeriCorps member pantry with food items stocked from community members and will work with you to get items that you need.

Transit

City Year Buffalo will cover costs for bus passes during your year of service.

Your student loans may be eligible for forbearance

You may be eligible to have the repayment of a qualified student loan temporarily postponed while you are serving. While a loan is in forbearance, the individual is not required to make payments. Learn more on AmeriCorps’ website to see if you’re eligible and how to apply. CY Buffalo staff will help guide you through this process as best we can as each individual loan situation will vary.
