Ways to Give

Gifts and pledges can be made in many ways

Since 2003, City Year has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four stars, certifying our commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsible fiscal management. Less than 1% of charities have received this distinction for 14 consecutive years, placing City Year among the most trustworthy and fiscally responsible charities in America.

Gifts of Securities

Gifts of long-term, appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares) provide significant tax benefits to the donor. In addition to exemption from federal capital gains tax, securities owned for more than one year provide the donor with a charitable income tax deduction for federal income tax purposes equal to the securities’ market value (on the date of their receipt by City Year) for up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income.

Donor-Advised Funds or Private Foundations

Donors may recommend or direct gifts through donor-advised funds or private foundations. To make a gift through a donor-advised fund, please include the City Year Tax ID/EIN. This important number is 22-2882549. Gifts should be made payable to City Year Philadelphia.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Gifts

Individuals may make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from their IRA directly to City Year. The amount of the QCD is excluded from a donor’s Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), and thus not subject to income tax; donors do not receive any income tax charitable deduction for the gift. Donors aged 73* and older may use QCDs to satisfy some or all of their Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) up to $100,000 annually.

This sample letter may be used to send to your IRA plan provider. In the memo field on the check, please include YOUR NAME and ‘IRA’ — as well as how you wish to direct your gift.

*Note that under the Secure Act 2.0, the age at which you are required to make minimum distributions (RMD) was raised to age 73 for individuals born between 1951 and 1959, and age 75 for those born in 1960 or later.

Legacy Gifts

Estate and gift planning helps you maximize the personal benefits of your charitable giving and allows you to make gifts you might have thought impossible. Legacy gifts of all sizes combine to help us meet our current and future financial goals. By including City Year in your will or trust, naming us as a beneficiary of all or part of a life insurance policy, or taking advantage of other giving opportunities, you can preserve your assets now and secure the future of City Year.

Establishing a planned gift within your own financial and estate plans requires careful thought, consideration and consultation with your own attorney, accountant or financial advisor. Our staff is available to work with you and your advisor(s) in confidence and with no obligation to help you explore the best possible way to make a planned gift. Please contact us to request a confidential, no-obligation conversation.
