City Year New York
Diverse. Fast-Paced. Tough. It’s not always easy to live in New York, but it’s always worth it. City Year New York is helping the city’s students and schools succeed.
Serving in New York
While New York is widely known for being a vibrant hub for all industries and cultures, many students in New York face significant challenges every day. As the largest school district in the state, the New York City School District serves more than 15,000 students across 125 schools.
Your corps experience
City Year is a key partner to the New York City School District in creating equitable learning opportunities for all students and develop the city’s future leaders. District-wide, more than 70% of students participate in a state assistance program (SNAP, healthcare or foster care). AmeriCorps members support teachers and staff in delivering instruction that serves the development of the whole child and is responsive to the diverse needs of New York’s youth.
With more than 76% of students tutored by AmeriCorps members last year improving their test scores, AmeriCorps members are truly making an impact. Consisting of close-knit communities with ample opportunities to develop meaningful personal and professional relationships, New York is an ideal place to serve.
Serving in New York schools
Serve in one of 15 elementary and middle schools throughout the New York area. All schools are accessible by public transportation. It is not necessary to have a car in New York, and you’d be considered a bit of an anomaly for owning one. New York schools are filled with passionate, vibrant students who aren’t afraid to tell you exactly what they think. This is both the charm and challenge of New York.
You’ll work with a committed and diverse group of 6–15 City Year AmeriCorps members who share your passion for service and personal growth. Over 90% of City Year New York alums report that their service was fulfilling and worth-while. Many of our corps members stay in touch with their team members years after they’ve completed their service.
AmeriCorps members also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of career development programs. We offer an intensive day of professional development workshops and seminars along with year-round resume coaching, mentorships, undergraduate and graduate application guidance and other forms of personalized coaching.
City Year AmeriCorps members are positive role models to their students. Many students feel at ease with their school’s AmeriCorps members, and see them as a bridge between themselves and their teachers. At the same time, busy teachers welcome the extra hand in the classroom and beyond. Providing a strong support system for students and teachers helps lift-up everyone in a community, including parents.
