Welcome to Memphis

Memphis has a history of people standing up for what’s right. This is a city full of people committed to getting things done and has opportunities to both welcome and keep young professionals working in the city.

Living in Memphis

Memphis is major southern center for commerce, education, art, entertainment and music and has a strong history of people doing what’s right, making it an ideal place to spend a year making an impact.

  • Average rental cost for a two-bedroom ranges between $600–$900/month. Popular neighborhoods include: midtown, downtown and University of Memphis area, and AmeriCorps members generally serve in the 240 loop of the city.
  • We recommend the Apartment Finder and Roommate Finder guides to help you find your new home.
  • Memphis is primarily a driving city. There is a public bus system, the MATA, but it is unreliable. AmeriCorps members are highly encouraged to have a personal vehicle or carpool with teammates.
  • There are plenty of cheap eats and activities around the city or look into the Memphis Food Assistance program.
