City Information

Memphis is known for its music, soul, and BBQ. Memphis is proud of its professional sports teams, who both play in the heart of downtown Memphis. There are many free local events around the city on weekends. Memphis has a lot of historical attractions such as the National Civil Rights Museum, Slave Haven, and Hotel Lorraine, Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, Graceland, and Beale Street. 


Housing

Average rental cost for a 2 bedroom ranges between $600-$900/month. Popular neighborhoods include: Midtown, Downtown, and University of Memphis area. Schools where AmeriCorps members serve are located inside the 240 Loop of the city.  


Transportation

Memphis is primarily a driving city. There is a public bus system, the MATA, but it is unreliable. AmeriCorps members are highly encouraged to have a personal vehicle or carpool with teammates.
