The application can be accessed from any browser (Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer) as well as any device.

Submission Requirements

To be considered for a City Year AmeriCorps position, the online application must be submitted by 11:59PM EST on following deadline dates

We highly recommend that you apply for our early deadlines. Applying early allows you greater opportunity of being accepted by your preferred location. 

*Applications submitted after April 30 will be considered based on availability of positions and decisions will be made on a rolling basis. 

Getting Started 

Account Registration 

To register for a City Year application account, go to: joincityyear.force.com 

You must have a valid email address in order to register for an online application. Your email address will serve as your username. If you do not have an email address, you may obtain one from a free email service such as Gmail or Yahoo. 

Make sure your email address is accurate, as we will be sending all correspondence to the address you specify throughout the application process. Please be sure to look at your email settings to allow all emails addresses from cityyear.org to be received in your inbox. For Gmail users, please check your “Promotions” folder for email from cityyear.org; drag and drop your email into your Inbox folder to receive all future email in your inbox folder. 

After you register, please check your email to activate your account. You will be prompted to click an activation link and change your password.  

Start Application 

Once your account is activated, you will be logged into the City Year Online Application Portal. Click on the “Start Application” button to begin a new application. 

Complete the initial requirement questions to ensure that you are eligible to apply to City Year. If you are eligible to apply, you can begin the application, starting with the Welcome Section. Complete the welcome page and click “save.” 

 


 

Navigation of the Online Application 

The online application consists of nine sections. Click on the icon on the top, left hand side or any of the circles to navigate to any of the nine sections. You may work on these sections in any order you choose. Once you have completed the section and click “Save and Continue.” The data you entered or changed in that section will be saved automatically. 

The 10  sections of the application include: 

Section 1 & 2: Welcome 
Section 3: Contact 
Section 4: Background 
Section 5: Location 
Section 6: Experiences 
Section 7: Interest 
Section 8: Reference Information 
Section 9: Demographics 
Section 10: Review and Submit 

Following Section 9, you will be prompted to review & submit your application. You will be able to review the full application at this time and make any final changes. Once you have reviewed your application, click “Submit Your Application.” 

Please note that the color of the circles for each sections indicates whether that particular section is complete (green), missing information (orange) or not started (gray). To submit a complete application all sections must be green.  

On the Application Homepage, you can see the percentage completion as well as the estimated length of time that it should take to complete the application. 

To sign out of the online application, simply click on the “Sign Out” link located in the top-right corner. 

 

General Instructions 

As you begin the online application, you will notice that some of the fields have already been filled with information you provided in Section 1. Be sure to review this information for accuracy, in case changes occurred since you first created the account. 

All fields are required unless indicated otherwise. You will not be able to submit your application without completing these required fields. 

The online application is designed to allow you to complete it at your own pace. You may sign out and return to your application at a later date without losing any information you have already entered. Once you have completed a section and have clicked “Save and continue,” the data you entered or changed in that section will automatically be saved. 

For your privacy, you will be logged off of City Year’s online application automatically after 1 hour of inactivity. 

Once you’ve submitted your application, you can track the status of your application by logging into the Application Portal. The statuses you will see are as follows: 

         Submitted – your application has been sent to City Year 

         Name of Reference #1 – reference from this individual has been received 

         Name of Reference #2 – reference from this individual has been received 

You will also be able to view your submitted application, but you will not be able to make any edits. Should you need to change any information, please contact your City Year Admissions staff member. 

If you are invited to serve with City Year, you will be notified of your invitation and asked to log back into the Application Portal to accept or decline the offer.  

Online Application Section Descriptions 

 

Sections 1 & 2: Welcome 

Organization Affiliation: Select all organizations that you are involved with on your school’s campus or in your community. This could be both your current involvement or a previous relationship with any organizations. 

Education:  Indicate any high school and/ or post-high school education you have or will complete. Included school name, length of enrollment and area of study/major (if applicable).  

Section 3: Contact  

Include your full name, birthdate, phone number, and full permanent address. Email address will auto populate. 

Section 4: Background 

This section asks if you’ve applied to City Year in the past, as well as which deadline you would like your application to be reviewed and considered for, and other important questions like language competency to be better understand your ability to communicate with our diverse student population. 

In addition to these topics, we need to know if you would need any physical accommodations. These questions help ensure that our AmeriCorps members are placed into schools that can provide those accommodations.  

Section 5: Location 

Your location preferences are very important to us throughout your admissions process. In addition to asking for your top location choice, we also want to know what other sites may interest you. If your first choice is unavailable for some reason, we will then seek alternative locations for your consideration using the locations you provide.  

Section 6: Experiences 

This sections allows us to learn more about your prior experiences you have had working with youth, working on diverse teams, serving others and other relevant experiences. This information gives us a better understanding of the skills and techniques you will be able to add to a team during the City Year service year.  

Your resume is another opportunity to highlight your other achievements. If you are in doubt about whether a particular experience is qualified to be listed here, list it anyway. If you have gaps between school, employment or military service it is to your benefit to describe your activities during that period as we are interested in knowing how you spent that time. 

Section 7:  Interest 

This section includes two short answers about your interest in serving with City Year and how serving will help you reach your personal and professional goals. These questions give us a better understanding of who you are, what about City Year interests you and what you’re looking to get out of serving with City Year.  

Section 8: Reference Information 

This section asks for contact information for two individuals who can provide you with professional references. Please note that upon entering a valid reference – an email will be automatically sent to your reference requesting them to complete the reference form.   

 You must identify individuals who are familiar with your background, either in an education setting, or who can speak to your professional skills or commitment to working with youth.  

Examples of good references include, a teacher, advisor, coach, job supervisor or community leader. A reference from a family member, peer or friend will not be accepted.  

If you don't know yet who will write your references, please put "Reference" under Reference First Name, "Hold" under Reference Last Name, joinus@cityyear.org and your own phone number. You will be able to update these references after submitting your applicaiton. We will not be able to offer you a position to serve with City Year without two valid references, however.  

Step 9: Demographics 

This sections captures your demographic background. Our admissions process ensures that demographics of our City Year AmeriCorps are reflective of the students and communities they serve in. Therefore, we encourage applicants from all different races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds to apply. 

Step 10: Review and Submit 

Once you have completed all the required fields in each of the steps, you will be able to preview the application. It is strongly recommended that you review each section carefully, to ensure your information is accurate and complete. Once you submit your application, you will not be able to make any further edits, aside from your reference information.  

If there is any required information missing from Steps 1-9, the Review & Submit section will allow you to easily go back and complete the required sections. 

You are also encouraged to save a copy of your application for your records, so you can you reference your application throughout the rest of the admissions process.
