City Year seeks to enlist our nation's most promising emerging leaders of different races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds to help students reach graduation and beyond. We also seek individuals of all genders, sexual orientations, religious, and political backgrounds.  We believe that individuals who share the same racial, ethnic, or socio-economic background of the students we serve have a particularly important role to play in helping students succeed, given the unique relationships that our AmeriCorps members build with students.

Leveraging the diversity of our organization is important so that we can benefit from the talent and energy of all those who can contribute to our effort, and also to increase the opportunity for engagement in the circles of influence in our diverse society. As a leading national education service organization, City Year seeks to be diverse because we aspire to serve as a model of what an inclusive, “beloved community” looks and acts like in the United States and abroad.  We are intentional about having our AmeriCorps members serve on very diverse teams, as the ability to collaborate and effectively work with others is a key skill that many of our alumni cite as one of the biggest learning experiences from their year of service.  Further, City Year AmeriCorps members successfully model for our students their ability to collaborate as a part of a diverse team.
