Cleveland’s revitalized downtown, lakefront park and world-class museums make this low-key Midwestern city a cool place to be. For more than two decades, City Year AmeriCorps members have served Cleveland’s schools, helping students to thrive.
While Cleveland is widely known for being a vibrant center for academia, business, tech and medicine, many students in Cleveland face significant challenges every day. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Breakthrough Charter Schools serve more than 40,000 students in 115 schools.
“I walked into my service year with my mind open and a passion for service and quickly realized that I was a part of something much bigger than myself. My service experience has given me far more than I could have ever imagined. Anyone can serve, in any way.”

Professional development
As a City Year AmeriCorps member you’ll not only make a measurable impact in the lives of the students and communities you serve, but you’ll grow as an individual, too. During your 11 months of service, you’ll develop leadership and professional skills that will help you advance in your career after City Year—whether you choose to go into nonprofit, law, medicine or something entirely different.
Community involvement
Create a positive climate of high expectations and engagement that ripples throughout the greater Cleveland community.
Over the last 30 years we have built a robust relationship with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools, teachers, families and the community at large. In 2019, we welcomed Breakthrough Charter Schools as our newest partner. We can’t wait to welcome you.

The AB Hart School team created a lovely puzzle portrait today for their community meeting, based on teamwork. It allowed Corps members to color their own piece of the puzzle and come together to make one complete piece.

Teamwork is a critical component of success, especially in City Year. By working together and relying on each other's strengths, we can achieve more than we could individually.
——
Teamwork fosters a sense of community and belonging. When team members work together towards a common goal, they build strong relationships and foster a supportive network. These relationships go beyond just work and can extend into our personal lives, creating a tight-knit community that feels like a second family....
Black history is not just about slavery and segregation, although these are important parts of the story. It is about the countless individuals who have made a difference in their communities and the world. From inventors and artists to activists and leaders, black history is full of inspiring and empowering stories.
It is important to recognize that black history is not just limited to February. It is a continuous narrative that has been shaped by the experiences of black people across generations. It is a story that should be taught and celebrated throughout the year, not just for one month.
Yesterday's trailblazers, today's leaders, and tomorrow's game changers. Black History Month celebrates the past, present, and future impact of Black Americans.
From February 1st to March 1st, let's recognize and honor their contributions.
