Building a better future
At City Year, we believe that all students can succeed and that developing the skills and talents of young people contributes to strong, vibrant communities—positive outcomes that benefit all of us.
The challenge
Across the country, many K-12 students can benefit from additional support, relationships and resources so they can engage more deeply with their learning, stay on track to graduate from high school, and be prepared for college and career. And our AmeriCorps members, young adults, ages 17 to 25, can develop critical workforce and interpersonal skills and access exclusive scholarships through a year of service with City Year.
What we do
City Year AmeriCorps members serve in schools all day, every day, preparing students with academic, workforce and interpersonal skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
Our unique approachCity Year AmeriCorps members not only make a difference in the lives of students they serve but also acquire valuable workforce skills that help them and prepare them to be leaders in their communities and their careers.
Our alumniAs City Year continues to innovate alongside our school and district partners, we aim to share what we are learning and contribute to a broader conversation about how to ensure greater access to learning opportunities and improved academic outcomes for all students.

City Year was founded in 1988 as a national service program to unite young adults for a demanding year of full-time community service. City Year has grown from 50 corps members in Boston to more than 2,000 members serving in 29 US cities, as well as in South Africa and the UK.
National service helps young people develop into leaders, problem solvers and more active citizens. AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National and Community Service deploys more than three million Americans in service through its nationwide core programs and partnerships with nonprofits like City Year.
Building a welcoming & thriving culture
At City Year, we sometimes say we work not only “at” City Year, but also “on” City Year, recognizing that the organization, like our world, is constantly evolving and changing. One thing that’s never changed: our aspiration to create positive school and work environments where everyone feels a sense of connection and community, is supported to do their best work and thrive, and feels empowered to learn, contribute, lead and create to their fullest potential.
City Year’s core values represent the deepest beliefs and highest aspirations of our organization and our mission.
