Join City Year DC's Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service!
As a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service to others, City Year considers Martin Luther King Day as a day ‘on’ not ‘off’. Each MLK Day, City Year mobilizes its 3,300 AmeriCorps members and thousands of volunteers for a day of service in communities across the nation. In coordination with local partners, City Year AmeriCorps members and volunteers engage in service projects that include painting schools, beautifying neighborhoods and parks, and assembling community resource kits.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
Pre-registration and a ticket are required in order to volunteer for City Year DC's MLK National Day of Service event. Both tasks can be completed on this page by scrolling down and clicking purchase tickets. All confirmed and pre-registered volunteers will receive emails in early January with specific details indicating when and where they should check-in on the morning of the event.
How do I secure a ticket?
Individuals, Friends + Families
A donation to City Year DC is required to secure a ticket. Your generous, tax-deductible donations help us offset the costs of planning and running the event and support the 8,000 students we serve in 20 schools across Washington, DC each day. You will receive a donation receipt from City Year, Inc. a few weeks after the conclusion of the event. Ticket costs are not refundable upon purchase.
More information about our 3 host service sites will be shared in the next few weeks. Please continue to check this page for updates.
What kind of service projects will I be able to complete? When will I choose a project?
Service projects will include painting, landscaping, organizing, and light construction across 3 separate service sites within walking distance of each other. Volunteers will select their project on the day of the event during the check-in process.
Please note that we are unable to reserve spots on a particular project for groups of volunteers in advance. If you'd like to serve on the same project with another volunteer, you should plan to go through the day-of-event check-in process together. In addition, the only way to guarantee that all members of your group/company will be placed at the same service site is to either 1) purchase an event sponsorship or 2) register multiple people at the same time with one form of payment. Otherwise, volunteers will be randomly assigned to one of our three service sites.
What do I need to do before the day of the event?
Step #1:Print and sign your volunteer waiver(s).Click here to download a waiver for each registered adult and child who will be volunteering. Fill out the waiver completely and bring a paper copy with you to your check-in location on the day of the event.
Step #2: Check your email regularly for updates on your specific check-in location and e-ticket.
Step #3:Save, screenshot, or print your e-ticket and bring it with you on the day of the event.
