Learning and development

Your service year will be challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us.

The goal of the Learning and Development Department at City Year San Antonio is to support with the learning, training, and development of approximately 100 AmeriCorps members as we strive to build an anti-racist, youth-centered organization during a time while we expand our service from elementary and middle schools into high schools across the East and West sides of San Antonio. This role is critical in supporting both the delivery of high-quality attendance coaching, behavior, and academic performance interventions in our schools, as well as the professional and identity development of our AmeriCorps members.

Professional development

Twice a month, from 1:00-5:00 PM, all our school teams come together for an afternoon of Professional Development. From social-emotional learning and academic intervention strategies to Anti-Racist Caucuses and Affinity Groups, the goal is for every Americorps member to feel developed as young leaders and professionals.

Improving our diversity, belonging, inclusivity and equity

If we want to create a more diverse, inclusive, equitable space of belonging for all folx, our corps and staff must be able to articulate what liberation based on race and gender identity would look like at City Year San Antonio and the roles each person would play in making this happen. During our learning and development half days, we participate in Anti-Racist Caucuses and Affinity Groups to understand who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going as an individual and an organization.

Community engagement

Growing external partnerships with community-based organizations and leaders is critical to being a part of the San Antonio education reform community. Building partnerships will expand our collective impact on students and families while helping build awareness in the world of San Antonio education reform. During our learning and development half days, we are fortunate to welcome our community partners as teachers and leaders for our corps and staff members. Additionally, we work to share our resources and provide physical and monetary support for our partners’ initiatives and goals in the community.

Observation and coaching

Twice a month, from 1:00-5:00, our staff collectively participates in coaching and observation of our school teams. This is our opportunity to develop our teams to ensure we are delivering high quality program to our partner schools as well as ensuring that you feel supported in the classroom as interventionists.
