Learning and development

Your service year will be challenging. You will gain skills in academic tutoring and personal/professional development. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us. You will spend a lot of time with your team, building relationships and strengthening your collaboration.

Your learning and development training with City Year Providence will start when you arrive in August. You will receive intensive training in:

  • Youth development
  • Highest leverage tutoring techniques
  • DBIE (diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity)
  • Professional skills such as public speaking, communication and collaboration

When you meet your students in September, you will feel confident in building strong relationships with them in order to support improved academic outcomes.

Supporting your learning and development

  • You will have frequent check ins to discuss your service with students, your teamwork, and your plans following City Year.
  • You will be observed and coached in the classroom to ensure the best outcomes for your students.
  • You will have formal performance reviews three times a year to support you in achieving the goals you set for your service year.

Mentorship Program

  • The City Year Providence Mentoring Program seeks to connect current City Year AmeriCorps members with the local community and business leaders to help you prepare for life after your year of service.
  • Based on interests and desired career fields, we pair our AmeriCorps members with local leaders across a variety of fields who can provide an outside perspective, direction, networking relationships and opportunities to grow personally and professionally.

LACY (Leadership After City Year) program

  • You will be provided support for your LACY plan in several ways, through trainings (such as resume building or networking), our mentor program, and guided work time to prepare for your LACY plan.
  • City Year Providence also will bring in industry experts and partners to help you find your right next step after City Year. We have many connections with teacher preparation programs and other non-profits in the area who love to work with City Year alums.
  • We will work to learn more about your LACY interests and create a track for you that suits your needs.

Teacher pipeline

  • We support a growing number of AmeriCorps members interested in teaching by providing pathways to traditional and alternative teacher preparation programs. Employers increasingly view City Year as a strong talent pipeline and are seeking to establish more channels to recruit alumni.
