Learning & development

Your service year will be challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating an environment where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us.

Our Learning and Development team is dedicated to your growth and development. City Year Miami teams are made up of first-year AmeriCorps members, one second-year AmeriCorps member and a Team Leader, all managed by an Impact Manager who is a full-time City Year staff member.

Basic Training Academy

The first few weeks of your service year will be full-time training, called Basic Training Academy (BTA). In these trainings, you‘ll focus on building community with one another, getting to know the Miami area and self-reflection. After the first few weeks of BTA, you will get assigned your school team. Once you’re in service, trainings will occur a few times a month and be more school specific and job specific.

Professional development

AmeriCorps members will also focus on their Life After City Year (LACY) plans throughout the year with support of the City Year staff. City Year Miami places an intentional focus on LACY through skill development supports resume and cover letter creation, interview tips, networking opportunities (with local and national organizations) and Mentoring programs for returning AmeriCorps members. City Year Miami hosts “LACY Nights” throughout the year for all AmeriCorps members.
