Your service year will be challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.
The power of teamwork and collaboration
We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us.
Our Learning and Development team is dedicated to your growth and development. City Year Memphis teams are made up of first-year AmeriCorps members, a second-year AmeriCorps member, and an AmeriCorps Team Leader who are all managed by a full time staff member—their Impact Manager.
Basic Training Academy
The first few weeks of your service year will include intensive training, called Basic Training Academy. In these trainings, you all focus on building community with one another, getting to know the Memphis area and self-reflection. After these first few weeks, you will get assigned your school team and from there the trainings will occur a few times a month and be more school specific and job specific.
Preparing you for life after City Year
Throughout your service year, you will also focus on your Life After City Year (LACY) plans, with support of the City Year staff. City Year Memphis places an intentional focus on LACY through skill development supports (resume and cover letter creation, interview tips), networking opportunities (with local and national organizations) and chances to interact with a lot of potential employers. City Year Memphis places a special focus on Teacher Pathways with several formalized and intentional teacher pathway partnerships. If you are interested in teaching following your year of service, or in learning more about potential pathways to teaching, be sure to connect with your manager to learn more about our partnerships.
