Learning and development

Your service year will be challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, school partners and the world around us.

City Year LA is invested in your learning and development journey. Support and opportunities include:

  • Basic Training Academy (BTA): The first two weeks of service are spent in training. BTA is a learning experience that introduces you to City Year culture, orients you with the communities you will be serving in, builds connection and belonging amongst teams and develops mindsets and skills that prepare you for a year of powerful service. Additional training is scattered throughout the fall and winter.
  • Restorative Justice: CYLA AmeriCorps members support the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Restorative Justice initiative. All AmeriCorps members are trained during the year to use Restorative Practices during their service.
  • Mid-Year, & End of Year Summit: AmeriCorps members participate in week-long LACY (Life After City Year) summits during their service year with CYLA. You will be surveyed to learn about your post-service year interests and sessions offered are based on the results. Types of sessions include resume workshops, mock interviews, graduate school application work time, alumni panels and more!
  • LAUSD Intern Program: City Year LA’s second year program offers the option to apply for the CYLA Teaching Intern Program. Pursue your teaching credentials while you serve and receive a guaranteed offer of employment from LAUSD if eligibility requirements are met.
  • Observations, coaching, feedback and formal performance conversations from Program Manager and Team Leader
  • National affinity groups and white anti-racist learning and inquiry series
  • Equity training and workshops
  • Networking opportunities with corporate partners such as Disney and Deloitte
  • Life After City Year (LACY) Summits
  • Continuous learning and development training sessions
  • Leaderships roles and opportunities (ex. Corps Council, IT coordinator and communication coordinator)

In July 2020, City Year created an Office of Equity as part of our ongoing efforts to advance diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity (DBIE) both within and outside of the organization and to become a more equitable and just anti-racist organization. Through deliberate listening, learning and self-examination, we seek to work in partnership with our communities, AmeriCorps members, staff and alumni to put what we are learning into practice.
