Learning and development

Your service year will be challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. Your experience will be most rewarding when you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us. We are dedicated to ensuring that this year is not only a year for students' growth but also a year of your personal and professional growth.

  • Basic Training Academy (BTA) will be about two and a half weeks prior to actual service starting. During this time, AmeriCorps members will receive information on policies and procedures, City Year and City Year Dallas culture, team builders and time to build community with your new teammates, as well as information and skill building to help you support students in attendance coaching, math and literacy interventions and more.
  • Beloved learning and development days (Beloved Days) occur about twice a month, and school-based learning and development days occur about twice a month. These typically alternate Fridays. In these trainings, you will receive tutoring strategies and support and professional development sessions.
  • City Year Dallas has a LACY (leadership after City Year) committee that does a phenomenal job at gathering the interest of our AmeriCorps members regarding future career and school choices. External professionals lead sessions for our AmeriCorps members to speak to their interest. This is done in the form of panel discussions, mentor groups, resume training, interview trainings and LinkedIn trainings, etc.
