Learning and development

Your service year will be rewarding and challenging. Outlined below are the ways that City Year will prepare and support you in your work this year and beyond.

The Power of teamwork and collaboration

We value dialogue and creating environments where our differences are supported and celebrated. When you have a growth mindset to learn about yourself, your students, partners and the world around us, your experience will be most rewarding.

Every AmeriCorps member in Columbus is on a team led and managed by an Impact Manager who is a full-time City Year staff person. In addition to the support you’ll receive from your manager, City Year Columbus leads training about curriculum usage and lesson planning on learning and development days to help you feel prepared for the day-to-day work of your service.

Developing the whole corps member

In addition, our staff is dedicated to supporting your professional and personal development. Listed below are other ways in which our learning and development days and curriculum is focused to support you and your plans for after your City Year Service.

Mentorship

  • Every AmeriCorps member gets a Deloitte mentor who will focus on your professional skills development.
  • Every AmeriCorps member is able to engage in career-based affinity groups to make connections and network in their career field area of interest.

Diversity, Belonging, Equity, Inclusion (DBEI)

In July 2020, City Year created an Office of Equity as part of our ongoing efforts to advance diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity (DBIE) both within and outside of the organization and to become a more equitable and just anti-racist organization. Through deliberate listening, learning and self-examination, we seek to work in partnership with our communities, AmeriCorps members, staff and alumni to put what we are learning into practice.

  • Justice Talking training and sessions
  • Optional opt-in affinity groups: Neurodiverse, Tapestry (Womyn of Color), Male Community of Support, and CY PRIDE (LGBTQIA+)
  • DBEI trainings
  • Partnership with Kaleidoscope Youth Center
  • United Way presents the history of Redlining in Columbus

Career Development

  • Mock interviewing and networking sessions
  • Training from the school district
  • Corporate and community leaders come to share and train the AmeriCorps members
  • Leadership opportunities through City Year Columbus Committees: Corps Council, Recruitment and Admissions committee, Justice Talking, and more!
