Making Service to Students Possible

City Year Orlando is grateful to Heart of Florida United Way for their continued investment and partnership in our work during the 2020-2021 school year. This last year has been extremely challenging, but City Year Orlando is proud to have been able to serve students in-person and virtually from the first day of school. Although our day-to-day service might have looked different, the fundamentals of our work remained the same.

Through the support of Heart of Florida United Way, City Year Orlando AmeriCorps members were able to continue building relationships with students, engage them in learning and provide the one-on-one support they needed in the classroom – both online and in-person – all day, every day for the entire school year.

During this challenging time, our 80 AmeriCorps members continued to inspire us with their dedication and commitment to supporting students in eight OCPS partner schools. Naomi Sanchez, City Year Orlando AmeriCorps member, is one example of how a strong relationship can make all the difference for a student.

It is not easy being the new student in class, especially during this school year. Kevin’s* first few weeks of class were filled with anger, frustration, and confusion. It was extremely challenging to get him to share his thoughts without pushing me away and closing himself off. With empathy and a lot of patience, I was able to gain his trust and build a strong relationship with Kevin. Together, we have learned the importance of communicating and listening to our feelings. I can confidently say the student I now see when I walk into my classroom is confident, brilliant, and engaged. I could not be prouder of Kevin and his journey from being the confused new student to one of the top students in his class.”

At City Year Orlando, the relationships with our schools, students and partners are always in the forefront of our work. Our AmeriCorps members are positioned to forge caring, consistent, and positive relationships with the students they serve every day. It’s through incredible partners like Heart of Florida United Way that helped make our service possible this year.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS
