City Year Milwaukee Team Spotlight

Meet the Julia A. Uihlein Team Serving at Alexander Mitchell Integrated Arts School

Hello from the Julia A. Uihlein Team at Alexander Mitchell Integrated Arts School! Alexander Mitchell is one of City Year Milwaukee’s “mega-teams,” with 13 AmeriCorps members, two Team Leaders and one mighty Impact Manager, serving in grades 3rd – 8th. The Mitchell Team has been busy in their classrooms helping partner teachers with class content, motivating their students to meet monthly goals and planning fun, virtual events for the school.

Some highlights from our team’s service year are…

  • “Working with my partner teacher to create an interactive and fun learning experience for the Native Americans unit. We worked together to create the lesson plans and found all the materials needed! Our class made it onto a Jiji leaderboard and the students who reached their monthly goal received a postcard. They were so happy and excited to show it off the next day in class!” – Lauren Yu
  • “I was able to help guide a student to pass a level they had been struggling with in ST Math. They were so excited and it helped them gain the confidence to excel in other areas of math!” – Katie Cooney
  • “My students did GREAT on their pre-thanksgiving break science quizzes!” – Sarah Gruber
  • “Being able to have students participate in lessons I’ve created just for them!” – Claire Kartz
  • “One major highlight during my service was helping out my partner teacher by creating a fun review Kahoot game that the students could play and earn gift cards! They had so much fun and we had a lot of participation which was awesome to see. It also let us know how much the students learned from ELA/SCI that we worked on the week prior. So far we’ve had four but I’m sure we will have more in the near future.” – Erick Valezquez
  • “One girl in my class told us how we’re doing great the teacher, para, and I are together and that we’re great at teaching them concepts. It was really meaningful when she said that because it can be easy to feel like we’re not accomplishing or teaching well.” – Jess Wener

Somethings that are bringing us joy….

  • “Joy to observing the team work their magic with the students. It reminds me why we do what we do!” – Yaphet Morales, Impact Manager
  • “Appreciation to my team! I’m so proud of them! I feel like a proud mother when they do just about anything. The students of Mitchell are truly in good hands!” – Calena Harris, Team Leader
  • “Joy, it always makes my day when any of the students in my class say, “hi or bye Miss Jess.”
  • “Appreciation to the Mitchell team for being so collaborative and innovative! I am excited to continue working with them to bring our fun ideas to our students.” – Mary Kate Paetow-Fanning
  • “Appreciation to my team for being the supportive and thoughtful human beings they are.” – Jess Wener
  • “Joy to being on such a loving and supportive team!” – Claire Kartz
  • “Appreciation to this FUEGO team, always pulling through and collaborating; a beautiful sight. – Martin Gonzalez
