Black History Month: What it Means to Me

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their vital roles in U.S. history. It is an opportunity to understand Black stories, uplift Black voices, and spotlight trailblazers who have made a difference in our culture and history.

Black History Month 2024’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” This theme is infused with African, Caribbean, and Black American lived experiences. The influence of Black people has been paramount in visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary, and other forms of cultural expression. Black artists have used art to preserve history, community memory, and empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements, such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans.

Black History Month means to me the appreciation and acknowledgment of Blackness and how it permeates all aspects of society. It is a reminder that the reverence shown during this month should remain consistent year-round. It is a call to action to continue to advocate for and uplift those within society who are often pushed to the margins.

Black History Month means celebrating Black liberation to me. It is more than just a month; it speaks to my entire existence. I use this month and every month after to educate myself and others on Black experiences, our culture, and our rich history. I am reminded daily that I am my ancestor’s wildest dreams. Breaking barriers, positively impacting our youth, and seeking the change I want to see in my world and my people.

Black History Month is something we should all take with us all year. New generations have their own Black history to create. There is no better time than now to look back on our history and say ‘thank you’ to our ancestors for paving the way, taking a stand, and creating seats at the table when there weren’t any for us. We say ‘thank you’ while still advocating for a better tomorrow.
