Grades 7-8 Science Teacher & Co-Designer

SPS Pilot:

Launched in August 2022, the Middle School Learning Pilot is an innovative program within Salem Public Schools that reflects the district’s commitment to reimagining the middle school experience for our students. It is a small learning community where educators see themselves as designers and guides of a holistic student experience, as well as teachers of a specific discipline. The goal of the pilot is to create relevant learning experiences that connect middle schoolers to the community, empower them to be independent learners, and offer appropriate challenges and supports. In year 2 we will build on lessons from year 1 and continue to co-design with students, families and staff. We measure the success of the pilot based on quantitative and qualitative student outcomes, including improved sense of agency and enjoyment of school and improved academic outcomes as measured by STAR and MCAS results.

Role:

The pilot is a small learning community where educators see themselves as designers and guides of a holistic student experience, as well as teachers of a specific discipline. As part of the 2-member STEM team, focusing on science, your job is to create engaging and personalized science learning for the 90 students in the pilot. While the model centers on flexibility and iteration, the teachers’ schedule will meet the STU CBA. At the same time, pilot educators will be empowered and excited that the implementation of their learning experiences may look dramatically different from a typical middle school model – from where that learning takes place to the co-creation of that learning with our students.
