Advancing student success, Investing in future leaders: FY24

This annual report provides an opportunity to recognize you, City Year’s partners and supporters, who play such a critical role in our shared work to support the learning and development of young people.

As we take a moment to look back on Fiscal Year 2024, we are filled with gratitude for your partnership and generosity. Together, we’ve made a profound difference for students, schools, communities, and the next generation of leaders, people like Rachel whose City Year experience as a student success coach set her on a course to become a teacher.
During FY24, nearly 2,000 SSCs served as tutors and mentors to support 130,000 students across 252 schools nationwide – helping them build the confidence and relationships that fuel learning and growth, stay on track to graduate, and develop the future-ready skills they need for college, career and life.
This impact can also be seen in the growth of the Student Success Coach Learning Network, which helped to generate increased interest in City Year and corps service across California. City Year Headquarters and our three California sites, City Year Bay Area, City Year Los Angeles and City Year Sacramento, have been working with several youth-serving organizations, with the support of the state’s AmeriCorps program, California Volunteers. City Year is helping to recruit, train and support hundreds more student success coaches in communities that otherwise would not have access to this resource, extending our impact beyond our direct service footprint.
Through this initiative, an additional 35,000 students were served last year in communities such as Fresno, Oakland, Porterville, San Diego, and more. The network and its success are central to City Year’s vision to establish a year of service as a critical developmental milestone for young people, alongside high school graduation, college graduation and meaningful employment.
Other highlights include:
- Improved student outcomes, with partner teachers and principals reporting that with City Year’s support, students demonstrated stronger engagement, improved attendance, and more progress toward grade-level learning. Nine out of 10 principals said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall experience of partnering with City Year, and 90% of partner teachers reported that City Year AmeriCorps members helped to create a welcoming environment for students throughout the school.
- New partnerships that extend City Year’s reach and impact. These include the first-ever partnership with an Historically Black College or University, Paul Quinn College, offering unique benefits to alums that make a college education more accessible.
- Research that shows how City Year contributes to workforce development. City Year partnered with Einhorn Collaborative and Cornell University on the 2024 City Year Alumni Bridging Study. The study revealed overwhelming satisfaction with the SSC experience, helping corps members gain a sense of the career path they want to take and develop workforce-ready skills that employers want now and in the future.
