Meet De’Andre L. Shepard, PhD!

Meet City Year Detroit’s Managing Director of Impact, De’Andre L. Shepard, PhD! De’Andre leads the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of the high-quality support City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members provide to students in Detroit schools. In addition, De’Andre provides oversight for the implementation of City Year’s Whole School Whole Child (WSWC) model through the supervision, coaching, and development of our impact team.

De’Andre has focused his career on building productive pathways for improving students’ academic and personal success in the classroom and through their participation in athletics and within their communities. His extensive background in education includes serving as a teacher, principal, college professor, director of athletics, and community outreach consultant.

De’Andre earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Oakland University, a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication from Wayne State University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from Oakland University. De’Andre’s published research projects include the professional development needs of practicing teachers in inclusive settings, the changing role of school systems operating in a global environment, and exploring teaching and leadership through the lens of athletics and sports.

We asked De’Andre some questions about himself to help you get to know him!

What is your “why”? Why do you serve?

“As a youth, I was always put in a box, and more importantly, I felt like I did not have a voice in how I wanted the world to see me. As a result, I often hid my abilities and passion to fit into that box. Even today, with my comfort in who I am as a leader, I sometimes feel like I put myself in a box. Therefore, I want to provide a trauma-free environment that allows young leaders to find their voice and purpose.”

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

“I enjoy spending time with My wife Aaquila and my two sons, Austin (10) and Anderson (8). I enjoy listening to all genres of music, traveling, and watching and attending sporting events. I also enjoy going to the gym to work out. The gym is full of great conversation and good for mental wellness.”

What quote inspires you?

“African Proverb. ‘It takes a Village’.”

If you had unlimited resources, money, and time, what would you do?

“I would buy an island, yes, an island. Build some homes on the land for my family and close friends and live a stress-free life. Lastly, I would create a nonprofit focused on improving educational opportunities for countries worldwide that lack the resources—the nonprofit would be tied to my own ‘why’ for developing leaders.”

Students say funny things. What is the best student quote you have ever heard?

“I don’t have a funny quote, but it is students’ misconception of my age. When I talk to them about sports and music, and we like the same athletes or musicians—it is confusing as I am too old for us to share any of the same interests.”

Thank you De’Andre for the vital contributions you make to City Year Detroit and the work we do!
