Women’s History Month: Which women inspire our corps members?

As City Year celebrates City Year AmeriCorps Member Appreciation Month, Women’s History Month is also underway. Marketing and Communications Intern Kia Smith asked corps members what woman inspires them the most.

Aaminah Muhammad – Serves at Chalmers School of Excellence
Esperanza Spalding, Jazz musician, and singer
‘She’s very graceful, confident, talented, and proud to be herself. She models everything I love about Black women with grace and individuality.

Angelica Dawson – Serves as Team Leader at Pershing Humanities Magnet School
City Year Chicago staff members Marshana Roberts, Quinn Daniels, and Connie Rutledge.
‘I am inspired by these women professionally and personally. Since I’ve known the three of them, they have always inspired me to work on myself, so I can be the best version of myself for myself and others. They’re three of the best people I know!’

Jhay Levy – Serves at Wendell Phillips Academy
Oprah Winfrey
‘She’s a woman that wears many hats and has always been ambitious, supportive, motivating, and inspiring to me.’

Hector Arellano – Serves at Marquette School of Excellence
Honoring: His Mom
‘My mom inspires me because she is strong and supportive of me. She is my biggest hope and inspiration in life.’

Alex Ramirez – Serves at Chalmers School of Excellence
Jennifer Lopez, singer and dancer.
‘I have loved her since I was 5 years old because I find it really great that she chooses to do what she wants despite what people think. My favorite quote of hers is ‘I’m not going to let anyone bring me down’ because that is how I choose to live my life.’
