Teams of City Year AmeriCorps members serve as tutors, mentors, and role models for Boston students most in need of additional individualized support at school. We focus on three program areas proven to help students stay on track to high school graduation:

  • Consistent attendance
  • Strong social-emotional skills
  • Improved academic coursework performance

Whether through an encouraging welcome to school each morning or extra time spent on talking through a difficult set of math problems, AmeriCorps members connect with students to develop key skills that help them learn, grow, and reach their college or career goals.

Civic-minded 18-24 year-olds serve full-time in high-need urban public schools as tutors, mentors, and role models for students.

AmeriCorps members provide individualized and small-group tutoring for students in grades 3-10 who are at risk of falling behind.

City Year teams lead school-wide initiatives designed to contribute to a school’s culture and learning environment.

What do AmeriCorps members do?

  • Attendance monitoring, coaching, and incentive programs
  • Set goals and develop action plans with students to improve their behavior and social-emotional skills
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in English and math
  • Coordinate extended-day programming with an emphasis on homework help and enrichment activities
  • Create a positive climate of high expectations and engagement throughout the school

This year, over 200 City Year AmeriCorps members are serving in 29 Boston Public Schools, making a difference for more than 12,000 students every day.
