Teaching residency

Teach Minnesota Teaching Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • competitive first-year salary (average is $44,443)
  • comprehensive coverage, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance
  • teaching certification from TNTP Academy
  • reduced tuition for an online Master of Science in education degree from Johns Hopkins University
  • Americorps Education Award: upon successfully completing the first year of teaching in a systemically under-resourced school, Teach Minnesota Fellows who are enrolled in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program are eligible for an education award of up to $6,345 that can be used for repayment of federal student loans and/or for future educational costs at schools that accept federal financial aid; however, it cannot be applied towards TNTP Academy tuition and fees.
  • postponement of federal student loans repayment: Teach Minnesota Fellows who enroll in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program may be eligible to pause repayment of outstanding federal student loans. You would not have to make any federal student loan payments during your year of service. After you successfully complete the year, AmeriCorps would repay any interest accrued during that time.
  • Black Educator Excellence Cohort: supports new Black enrollees in transitioning to the teaching profession to help address barriers to the classroom that Black teachers often face. This cohort provides support, including some financial, exam preparation support and builds a networking and fellowship community with other Black educators. All participants who identify as Black/African American who are enrolled in the 2023-24 cohort with Teach Minnesota are eligible for the Black Educator Excellence Cohort.

Why City Year loves Teach Minnesota

Teach Minnesota is one of the state’s first alternative routes to certification and your opportunity to join a cohort of talented professionals who are ready to change the game for students. Teach Minnesota uses a proven national Teaching Fellows model that’s trained nearly 40,000 teachers in 25 states and will elevate your academic and professional expertise into a high-impact career as a certified teacher in the Twin Cities.

Teach Minnesota’s first class of 30 Fellows started training in the summer of 2022. The program aims to scale to 100 new teachers per year by 2024. It is committed to recruiting cohorts with at least 50% of teachers identifying as a person of color, positioning Teach Minnesota to shift the landscape of diverse educators in the Twin Cities by at least 10% over five years.

To apply

City Year AmeriCorps members and alums who apply for Teach Minnesota will be eligible for a priority application process and to bypass the initial short-answer essay questions. When submitting your online application, complete all pages. On the “application questions” page, use the code “City Year” in response to the short-answer application questions. By inputting the code, City Year applicants automatically get pushed to the interview round.

Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis, so applying early could increase your chance of admission.

Please compare the start date for Teach Minnesota to your City Year graduation date. City Year AmeriCorps members should avoid applying to Teach Minnesota with a scheduling conflict, since being accepted into a program that starts before your City Year graduation would end your term of service with City Year, which could result in losing benefits that are available to you as a City Year alum.

To identify your City Year affiliation

All applicants are asked to note if they are a City Year AmeriCorps member or alum.
