Knowing Your Why: A Self-Paced DBIE Workshop

Join Stephen Spaloss, chief equity officer of City Year, for a virtual workshop to learn more about Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion and Equity and reflect on what equity means to you.

We’ve teamed up with Starbucks to offer a virtual workshop in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service. Together, we can strengthen our community and advance equity by recognizing that each of us can help create a more just world.

Knowing Your Why is a City Year workshop designed to help you develop a deeper understanding of diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity—a journey we believe begins with self-reflection. You will have an opportunity to stretch your sense of perspective, learn about the benefit of taking an adaptive approach to challenges, and reflect on why equity is personally important to you. Join City Year Chief Equity Officer Stephen Spaloss for this conversation about how identifying your purpose—your “why”—can deepen your engagement with our shared DBIE work.

One of the first things we do with our AmeriCorps members is a similar workshop, because a sense of purpose can inspire and energize them during their year or more of full-time service in schools across the country. Our AmeriCorps members partner with teachers to help make school a welcoming, joyful place where students feel like they belong, and can learn and grow—which is at the heart of educational equity.

Before you start the workshop, download this participant guide to take notes and reflect on what you hear and feel during the training.

Our Unique Approach

City Year’s approach is based on research about how students learn. AmeriCorps members serve as student success coaches, supporting the development and growth of students in systemically under-resourced schools.

Our Equity Work

As we strive to become an anti-racist organization, City Year commits to being an organization that actively promotes diversity, inclusivity, and equity, so that everyone in our community experiences a deep sense of belonging.

Student success coaches needed

Applications are now open for the 2022-2023 school year. City Year AmeriCorps members play a critical role in helping students reconnect with their school community, re-engage in their learning and recover from interrupted learning as a result of COVID-19.

Advancing equity together

Because of the support from The Starbucks Foundation grants focused on supporting youth, we are able to play an important role in bridging the opportunity gap and help build thriving and equitable communities through partnerships with school districts across the country.

City Year and The Starbucks Foundation are working together to advance educational equity while supporting a generation of young adults leading the way toward a more just world.
