Volunteer in Boston

Join us! Volunteers are an integral part of our work: helping Boston students, schools, and communities succeed. Whether you’re looking to make a one-time or ongoing commitment, work with your hands or inspire a student, there’s a volunteer opportunity for you.

Mentoring program (January – June)

City Year Boston AmeriCorps members are a diverse group of young adults between the ages of 17-25 dedicating a year of their lives to service in Boston Public Schools as mentors, tutors and role models. The Mentoring Program aims to give corps members a one-on-one relationship with a mentor by creating matches based on a corps member’s professional goals. Mentors gain a first-hand connection to City Year service and the rewarding experience of supporting a developing young leader. The program runs from January – June.

  • The application will open in October for the 2019-2020 corps year.

Alumni service reserves (ongoing)

Our Alumni Service Reserves program is an ongoing opportunity for City Year alumni to prepare and complete physical service projects in Boston Public Schools. Reserves can also opt to attend an evening training in order to be approved to manage and lead volunteers.

Shifts are flexible and at the volunteer’s discretion. They can range from daytime to nighttime and on weekdays and weekends depending on the season.

Community crew (ongoing)

Our Community Crew program is an ongoing opportunity for community members, alumni and more to participate in a monthly project supporting a Boston school or center. During the summer months, projects will focus on large exterior murals while over the winter, projects will shift indoors and focus on beautifying interior spaces.

Community Crew projects take place on the second Saturday of each month from 10 AM – 1 PM.

Custom physical service events

Groups can sponsor a custom service event for their employees or members. These events take place at a school or community center and though projects vary depending on school need and the time of year, they usually include painting, murals, landscaping, organizing, light construction and the creation of resource kits.

  • If interested, please fill out this form and a member of the City Year Boston staff will be in touch shortly to discuss possibilities.

Custom service workshops

Projects for Service Workshops benefit a school or community center but are completed remotely at either the City Year or the event sponsor’s office. Volunteers will pack supply kits, create incentive items, craft mosaics and much more. There are two different options for working with City Year to sponsor a Service Workshop.

Office Based Supply Workshop

Groups can sponsor a custom office based workshop for their employees or members. These events take place at City Year’s office in the Back Bay or the CY volunteer team can come to you.

  • If interested, please fill out this form and a member of the City Year Boston staff will be in touch shortly to discuss possibilities.

Craft nights

Groups can sponsor a custom Craft Night for their employees or members. These events take place in the evening at City Year’s office in the Back Bay.

  • If interested, please fill out this form and a member of the City Year Boston staff will be in touch shortly to discuss possibilities.

Signature events

Signature events are organized by City Year Boston’s volunteer team and designed to engage a variety of corporate and community volunteers. Due to the popularity of these opportunities, there are restrictions on the size of corporate groups who can attend at no cost. For larger corporate groups, sponsorship options are available.

Individual support

Even if you are unable to attend a service event, there are still ways to help. Many of our projects focus not only on improving school environments, but also on providing students with the tools they need to succeed. There are two different ways for you to support this effort:

Help us create resource kits for Boston’s students by directly donating school supplies. A list of needed supplies can be found here.

  • Organize a supply drive or packing event within your community to benefit Boston students. Please contact us at cybvolunteer@gmail for recommendations and support.
