Why City Year loves Brown University’s Department of Education

At the Department of Education at Brown University, students get the perspectives and tools they need to become agents for systemically under-resourced schools and systems, in Providence and beyond. The Master of Arts in teaching and urban education policy programs are committed to small, cohort-based experiences that allow students to personalize their graduate year.

The year-long Master of Arts in teaching program is unique in blending the best of university- and residency-based teacher education programs, combining intensive coursework, immersive teaching experiences and personalized coaching to prepare teachers to become culturally responsive and impactful educators advancing the cause of justice. As part of a small, collaborative cohort, students receive comprehensive, critical and equity-based preparation for secondary-school teaching careers (grades seven to 12) in English, social studies, math and science (biology, chemistry or physics/engineering).

By integrating research, theory and practice, urban education policy students learn how urban education policy works, how decisions are made, how to measure policy consequences and how to make an impact. The cross-disciplinary urban education policy program prepares students for a variety of professional careers and can also act as a springboard for advanced study involving policy analysis, planning and development in public education.
