City Year has been serving in Los Angeles for nine years and is currently the largest City Year site in the nation. Our AmeriCorps members make a difference by tutoring kids one-on-one, providing support in classrooms, and running after school programs in L.A.’s highest-need schools.
City Year L.A. will serve more than 28,000 students through whole school initiatives this year.
Back at our offices in downtown Los Angeles, 60 full-time staff members support our corps’ efforts to ensure they have the necessary training, resources, and professional development opportunities.
We pride ourselves on being one of the most innovative and fastest-growing sites in the City Year network with passionate supporters and champions ranging from the L.A. Mayor and school principals (100% of whom ask for us to come back each year!) to the Los Angeles Clippers and Hollywood celebrities. We are a diverse, hard working team that is dedicated to excellence on behalf of our city’s most-at risk students.
1 in 4 kids in Los Angeles won’t make it to graduation. City Year is working to erase this statistic by serving in 26 low-performing schools (7 elementary, 9 middle, 8 secondary, and 2 K-12) in high-poverty neighborhoods across L.A. – Pico Union, Boyle Heights, Watts, and South LA. We also have a Civic Engagement team that organizes thousands of community volunteers to conduct 25+ school beautification projects to make campuses more inspiring places to learn.
A recent study found schools where City Year serves are 2 – 3X times more likely to show improvements in state tests in math and English...
A Typical Service Day
