This was an exciting day for City Year Washington, DC, and for the 1,000 volunteers who came out to support our work at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Volunteers painted murals, built bookshelves and created teaching materials for classrooms at Burrville Elementary, Drew Elementary and Kelly Miller Middle Schools. What a surprise when President Obama, the First Lady and daughters Sasha and Malia dropped in to help! Before addressing the audience to talk about the importance of national service, they grabbed paint brushes and helped stain bookshelves which were placed in classrooms at Burrville Elementary School.
