On November 25th Disney Star Laura Marano made a surprise visit to the students at Leckie Elementary School. The event was made possible by City Year’s Leckie Elementary School team sponsor, Capital One. The school was the last stop on the “Book by Book” campaign which launched on October 28. Capital One partnered with The Heart of America Foundation and Communities in Schools to put this initiative forth and pledged to donate up to 50,000 books for every new like on their “Capital One Investing for Good” Facebook page. The campaign was put together in an effort to deliver age-appropriate books to underserved students and schools.

The “Austin and Ally” star started the day at an assembly for enthusiastic 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. She then headed to the school library and read to a group of second graders whose faces lit up upon gazing at their favorite TV star! The second graders asked Marano to read Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and looked upon anxiously as she flipped through the colorful pages.

Every child went home with three age appropriate books along with school supplies, also provided by Capital One. Laura Marano’s visit left a lasting impression on Leckie’s students who look forward to visiting the school library to check out new books. Events like this prove that there are stakeholders who go above and beyond to provide our students with the resources they need to flourish. Way to #makebetterhappen, Capital One!
