Baton Rouge

  • City population: 229,426
  • Temperature: Weather is hot and humid 9 months of the year. Hurricane season is from June-November. Average cool temperatures are in the 40s.   
  • Transportation: Public transportation is not reliable, therefore, we recommend carpooling to and from service each day with fellow AmeriCorps members. 
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $480. Many Corps members live with 2-4 roommates.

Boston

  • City Population: 645,966
  • Temperature: The fall tends to be mild, with temperatures in the mid-60s. By Halloween and Thanksgiving it can dip into the 40s. January and February are the coldest months, with average temperatures in the 20s or below (with lots of snow!). Temperatures will start to rise in April, which also brings lots of rain. The summer can be very hot and humid.
  • Transportation: The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is the local public transportation system and is highly reliable for getting around Boston as well as to and from service.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $600. Corps members typically live with 2-3 roommates. Many Boston apartments require at least first month and last month's rent up front and others also require a security deposit, and possibly a broker's fee as well.

Chicago

  • Temperature: In the summer, temperatures hit highs of 90 and in the winter, temperatures can be subzero with wind chill.  Chicago experiences all four seasons.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is highly reliable in Chicago and accessible throughout the entire city. City Year Chicago corps members receive a free transit pass during their service year.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $600. Corps members typically live with 2-3 roommates.

Cleveland

  • City Population: 390,113
  • Temperature: The warm part of the year is from late May to late September 20 with an average daily high temperature above 72°F. The cold season lasts from December to March with an average daily high temperature below 43°F.
  • Transportation: Most AmeriCorps members drive or carpool to their schools and City Year office.  Public transit passes are not provided. Cleveland’s public transit is available and very reliable and efficient.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is between $275-$500. Corps members often live in apartments and houses ranging from 2-5 roommates.

Columbia

  • Transportation: Public transportation options not reliable. Carpooling is encouraged if you do not have your own vehicle.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $500-$900/month. Most corps members live in student housing that has 4 bedrooms and is fully-furnished.

Columbus

  • Transportation: 30% of corps members drive or carpool to their schools and City Year office. Columbus' public transit is available and very reliable and efficient and City Year Columbus provides free public transit passes.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent ranges from $275-$500 and CMs often live in apartments and houses ranging 2-5 roommates.

Dallas

  • City Population: 1.258 million
  • Temperature: The warm season lasts from June to September with an average daily high temperature above 88°F. The cold season lasts from late November to late February with an average daily high temperature below 64°F.
  • Transportation: City Year Dallas provides DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) light rail and bus passes for any AmeriCorps Members who would like to utilize public transportation.  The DART system is fairly extensive and mostly reliable.  Many of our AmeriCorps Members choose to drive personal vehicles to and from their schools during the week.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is between $450-600. Corps members live with 1-3 roommates.

Denver

  • City Population: 649,495
  • Temperature: In addition to its more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Denver weather is known for its unpredictability. It can be snowy one minute and sunny the next! Denver experiences all seasons with cold winters and hot summers, but very low humidity.  
  • Transportation: Denver corps members receive a free public transportation pass. While corps don’t have a problem taking public transportation, many have also car. Denver is also a bicycle friendly city.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $500.

Detroit

  • City Population: 688,701
  • Temperature: The warm season lasts from late May to mid-September with an average daily high temperature above 73°F.  The cold season lasts from late November to early March with an average daily high temperature below 42°F.
  • Transportation: Most corps members get to and from service by car on their own or via carpool. Buses are the main form of public transportation and are moderately reliable on main city streets. City Year Detroit does not provide transportation passes.
  • Housing: The average rent for a one bedroom apartments is $728 a month and $813 for a two-bedroom apartment. Corps members generally have 1-2 roommates

Jacksonville

  • City Population: 842,583

  • Transportation: It is necessary to have a car. Jacksonville does have a bus system, but it is known to be unreliable and takes a considerable amount of time to get from one place to another. City Year does not currently provide transportation to ACMs in Jacksonville.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent ranges from around $600-$900 for a one bedroom and $750-$1,000 for a two bedroom.

Kansas City

  • City Population: 467,007

  • Transportation: While Kansas City has public transportation options, getting around is much easier and more efficient by car. Therefore, carpooling is the most popular way for City Year corps members to travel to and from the schools they serve.
  • Housing: The average cost of rent for a one-bedroom is $742 and $945 for a two-bedroom. There's also many properties that rent below market-rate for tenants with income restrictions.. Many corps members have roommates.

Los Angeles

  • City Population: 3.884 million

  • Transportation: City Year Los Angeles AmeriCorps members receive free public transportation pass. All 26 school are accessible via public transportation. About 60% of ACMs have their own car
  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $450-550. About half of corps members live while other corps members and others choose to live at home, with friends or other individuals.

Memphis

  • Transportation: All AmeriCorps members receive a free transit card each month allowing them unlimited use on Miami Dade Transit. Corps Members with cars are encouraged to bring them.
  • Housing: Average rental cost for a 2 bedroom in $800-$1000/month

Milwaukee

  • City Population: 594,833
  • Temperature: During the summertime, temperatures average between 70 and 80 degrees. During the winter, temperatures average around 20 degrees. There is the potential for major snowstorms and extremely cold temperatures and windchills during the winter months.  
  • Transportation: AmeriCorps members receive a free Milwaukee County Transit System bus pass. They bus system is reliable but it will take additional travel time to reach destination.
    About 50% of corps members choose to bring a car with them to use during service.
  • Housing:  The average cost of rent is between $350-$550. Most AmeriCorps members live with 1-2 roommates.

Providence

  • Housing: The average cost of rent is $500-$600 per month. Typically, 4-5 AmeriCorps members live together in a two-bedroom unit or 6-7 roommates in a three-bedroom unit. Others will rent a room from a local family.
