Last month, corps members at Aki Kurose Middle School Academy hosted the highly-anticipated 4th annual Student Art Slam, an event that gives students an opportunity to express themselves through art, dance, music, poetry and spoken word in front of peers and community members. Nearly 200 family and community members turned out to see Southeast Seattle students shining.
Students had the opportunity to show off many of their incredible artistic and creative talents through an art gallery display and a live performance. We had so many different students and talents represented, among them cooking, sculpture, drawing, painting, anime, collage, dance, singing, musical instruments, spoken word and poetry, photography, and more. City Year corps members had the planned the logistics for the event and facilitated an unforgettable night for students and families.
Each corps member was responsible for reaching out to several specific students with special creative talents, personally invite them to the event, and coach them in their preparation if needed. Aki’s own Cooking Club and Filipino Club cooked special dishes to add to the potluck provided by Aki parents and community. We saw singing and dancing performances in the cafeteria along with the art gallery and display for the first portion of the evening. Later we moved to the more intimate library setting to hear a few more incredible songs and poems.
