Last spring, City Year Providence Program Manager, Ali Imholt, attended the 2014 Coalition for Community Schools National Forum in Cincinnati, OH where she was introduced to a program called the Homework Diner- an ongoing, educational event focused on improving school-wide homework completion rates while encouraging parents/guardians to take a more active role in the academic success of their children. The model was presented at the conference by the Principal and Community Schools Director from Manzano Mesa Elementary in Albuquerque, NM. 

With this idea in mind, the TriMix Foundation team serving at Pleasant View Elementary School and Community Schools team implemented the concept and turned it into a bi-monthly parent engagement event, offering a hot meal from local restaurants and providing grade-level tutoring for students in grades PreK-5.  The first event took place on October 6th, with over 25 families, 10 teachers, 12 AmeriCorps members, and 50 students in attendance.  Dinner was catered by a neighborhood favorite, Robert's Deli, and bookbags filled with school supplies were raffled off.  The pilot event was a great success and there was an even better turn out for the second Homework Diner on October 20th.
