City Year Providence is thrilled to introduce our new Impact Managers: Nicole Bathalon, Anna Besler and Courtney Shea! Nicole is joining us from City Year New Hampshire and Anna and Courtney are new to the City Year community.

Nicole Bathalon

Hometown: Westfield, Vermont

City Year Providence (CYPVD): Have you served with City Year before?

Nicole Bathalon (NB): I served with City Year New Hampshire for 5 years. I was a corps member in '10-'11, a team leader from '11-'12 and a Program Manager from '12 - '15.

CYPVD: What led you to serve with City Year?

NB: I was participating in another AmeriCorps program when I met some AmeriCorps   members from City Year. I was instantly drawn to their energy and positivity. I was interested in teaching and loved the idea of working with students in schools. I also loved the community and support that City Year provided.

CYPVD: What does an Impact Manager do?

NB: As an Impact Manager I am responsible for managing the partnership between City Year and one of the schools that we work in. I work closely with the school administration and the teachers to make sure that the students' and school's needs are being met while meeting the goals that City Year has set. I also am responsible for managing a team of AmeriCorps members in their service with students and teachers. Providing them feedback, challenging them in their classroom and team setting and supporting their growth are a few ways in which I interact with my team.

CYPVD: How are you preparing for the new school year?

NB: Right now I am taking time to get to know Providence since it's a new city to me. I am also working closely with the Impact staff to make sure that our Team Leaders are prepared for their service as well as preparing to lead our new AmeriCorps members through their 4 weeks of training before school starts.

CYPVD: What is your favorite memory of school as a student?

NB: In elementary school my 5th grade teacher taught a basket making class and I loved it! We didn't really have a full after school program but this teacher took the time to teach us the art of basket making. It was awesome!

Anna Besler

Hometown: Iowa

CYPVD: What led you to serve with City Year?

Anna Besler (AB): I want to be able to work in education and serve those who need it the most.

CYPVD: How are you preparing for the new school year?

AB: I am getting to know my Team Leader, fellow Impact Managers and scheduling meetings with my principal and liaison at Gilbert Stuart.

CYPVD: What was your favorite book as a student? What is your favorite book now?

AB: My favorite book as a student was Matilda. I don't have a favorite book, but my favorite book genre is Historical Fiction and Sci-Fi.

CYPVD: What unique qualities will you bring to your team to help lead them in the upcoming school year?

AB: A Mid-Western mentality: I am really strong willed, hard working and open minded.

Courtney Shea

Hometown: Smithfield, Rhode Island

CYPVD: What led you to serve with City Year?

Courtney Shea (CS): I have worked in the field for a while and wanted a change. I       had never heard of City Year before until Kelly McGahan [City Year Providence           Learning and Development Manager] told me about it. I've always had very strong values and morals to help others and found parallels with those of City Year.

CYPVD: How are you preparing for the new school year?

CS: This being my First year at city year, I have been focusing on learning the culture and getting to know the elementary school I will be working in. I will be meeting with the principal towards the end of August to plan the school year out and strategize. I also met with the school liaison at Pleasant View and feel comfortable about working in this school.

CYPVD: What unique qualities will you bring to your team to help lead them in the upcoming school year?

CS: I have always been an empathetic person and an active listener. I believe in positivity and motivating one another. I will definitely bring these qualities to my team to build a strong work ethic and feeling of togetherness.
