BOSTON, MA – April 21, 2017 – On Saturday, April 22, 2017, City Year will once again join forces with Comcast NBCUniversal for the 16th annual Comcast Cares Day. More than 700 City Year AmeriCorps Members and staff will participate in Comcast Cares Days projects that will help revitalize and brighten 11 cities across the country including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Miami, New Hampshire, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Last year, Comcast Cares Day brought together more than 100,000 volunteers to support more than 900 projects in 21 countries.
Comcast Cares Day is Comcast NBCUniversal’s celebration of its year-round commitment to service and has grown into the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort. Since the event began in 2001, volunteers have contributed nearly 5 million hours of service at 7,700 projects and Comcast NBCUniversal has provided more than $20 million in grants to local non-profit community partners.
“City Year is proud to have served alongside Comcast NBCUniversal since the first Comcast Cares Day in 2001," said Michael Brown, CEO and Co-Founder of City Year. "We know first-hand the impact that Comcast Cares Day has -- the projects are transformative, especially in schools, where creating a welcoming and nurturing school environment can have a direct impact on student achievement. It's an extraordinary day led by a remarkable company with a clear year-round commitment to communities."
Projects taking place this Saturday include:
Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston, MA, where more than 350 volunteers will serve alongside City Year AmeriCorps Members to brighten spaces for students by painting common areas and educational murals, as well as building an outdoor seating area for learning. In addition, volunteers will pack supply kits for students and teachers. Comcast NBCUniversal also sponsors a team of City Year AmeriCorps members at the Burke High School, who support the school’s 530 students through tutoring, mentoring and school-wide support.
North Hollywood High School, Los Angeles, CA, where nearly 450 volunteers will serve alongside City Year AmeriCorps Members to paint murals, create college-themed stairwells, and other projects to enhance school pride throughout the campus for more than 2,800 students.
