CO=ourtey Straka, AmeriCorps Member Serving at City Year Philadelphia, University of Pittsburgh Alum

Why do you serve at City Year Philadelphia?
I serve so that young adults have the opportunity to develop through giving back to their community. I serve to take a stand for educational equity and instill confidence in our city's most deserving students; to practice and model "big citizenship."

What is your favorite City Year Value or Founding story?
The City Year Founding Story of Cathedral Building speaks the most to my year of service. As the story states, we may feel that our role is a minor part of a larger effort, and that our impact might not be felt or recognized every day. With each small effort or positive gain, my team helps create a foundation for our students and the students of years to come.

What advice would you give to future AmeriCorps Members?
Immerse yourself in City Year culture as much as possible; trust the process. You will be challenged throughout the entire year. Be comfortable in your strengths and don't be afraid to "get squishy!"
