On Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, numerous members of the finance and banking community joined City Year Orlando for our "It Takes a Village" Finance Breakfast at the Dubsdread Ballroom. This event was designed to inspire guests and help raise funds that will allow City Year to expand support to more Orlando students. Speakers for the day included Jared Billings, Vice President and Executive Director of City Year Orlando, Sarah Hudak and Ayanna Loud, AmeriCorps members, and John Pisan, City Year board member and Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director of Wells Fargo.

At City Year, we believe every child can succeed. We mobilize teams of AmeriCorps members to teach, guide, and act as near-peer role models to students. As a result, bonds are formed between the AmeriCorps members and the students that allow for breakthroughs to be made in both education and personal growth. This is something that Sarah Hudak can attest to. Because City Year "serves all day, every day, all year", she has seen the changes her students go through, for the better.

"One of my students had trouble getting to class on time. So, by the time he walked up to the classroom, unmotivated to attend the class, he would come in and put his head down or had his eyes glued to a YouTube video," said Sarah. "When I started noticing this behavior, I would immediately pluck him out of the classroom to work one-on-one. It was in this one-on-one interaction that I noticed he was just a little more motivated and a lot more capable."

There are several City Year AmeriCorps members who serve for an additional year, which allows them to see the changes that have taken place after a year of support. This only further inspires them to continue their path like Ayanna Loud. "Getting to come back, I've seen the growth and positive changes, not only of my students in the classroom, but of their maturity and respect as well. It has shown me that City Year makes an impact in students' lives and in the lives of AmeriCorps members," said Ayanna.

Education is key - and to City Year it is more than just that. It takes working together to ensure the success of every student by being in tune with what they need. The event’s theme was “it takes a village”, and with a village’s help, we make sure no student gets left behind.

City Year Orlando would like to thank CFE, Chase and Wells Fargo for sponsoring this event as well as John Pisan for his continued support and involvement with City Year Orlando.
